Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) and EACON Mining Technology have inked a strategic partnership aimed at transforming mining haulage. The agreement, signed on October 24 in Ningde, China, seeks to develop electric, autonomous systems that promise smart, safe, and sustainable solutions for the mining industry. By merging CATL’s advanced battery technology with EACON’s autonomous systems expertise, the collaboration targets the industry’s pressing challenges: reducing environmental impact, enhancing safety, and improving operational efficiency.
The partnership plans to scale autonomous electric haulage solutions globally. CATL’s batteries will integrate with EACON’s autonomous technology to deliver a more sustainable and efficient method for hauling materials, even in the harshest mining conditions. Wason Lan, CEO of EACON Mining Technology, emphasized the significance of this alliance: “This partnership represents a major step forward for the mining industry. By combining our autonomous driving expertise with CATL’s leadership in energy solutions, we’re creating a smarter, greener future for mining haulage.”
Key areas of focus include battery innovation, model mining projects, and global expansion. The companies will develop advanced batteries tailored for extreme mining conditions, ensuring electric autonomous haulage trucks can operate effectively in high altitudes, freezing temperatures, and rugged terrains. They will also design and implement autonomous haulage systems for open-pit mines, creating safe, scalable, and replicable models for global adoption. After successful trials in China, the partnership aims to expand its solutions to international mining markets, setting new standards for green mining worldwide.
As of September 2025, over 2,000 electric autonomous mining trucks from both parties are in operation, having covered over 65 million kilometers. The technology has been successfully deployed across various mining sectors, including coal, copper, and limestone, and is poised for further global expansion. Looking ahead, CATL and EACON will deepen their collaboration across capital, technology, market, and ecosystem, leveraging their combined expertise to usher in a new era of mining operations driven by green energy and intelligent automation.
This partnership could significantly reshape the mining industry’s approach to haulage. The integration of electric and autonomous technologies addresses critical environmental and safety concerns while promising to boost operational efficiency. If successful, this collaboration could set a precedent for other mining companies to adopt similar technologies, potentially accelerating the industry’s shift towards sustainability and automation. The global expansion of these solutions could also lead to standardized practices in green mining, influencing regulatory frameworks and industry standards worldwide. As the partnership progresses, it will be crucial to monitor its impact on mining operations, environmental sustainability, and safety standards, as well as its potential to drive innovation in related sectors.
