Missouri S&T’s Haunted Mine Blends Education & Terror This October

The Experimental Mine at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) is set to transform into a labyrinth of frights this October, as the annual Haunted Mine event returns for another year of spine-tingling entertainment. This event, which began in 1997, is more than just a Halloween attraction; it’s a tradition that allows mining and explosives engineering students to raise funds for competitions and conferences. The Haunted Mine opens its doors to the public on Friday, Oct. 17, and will continue to operate on select evenings through Nov. 1.

The Haunted Mine offers a unique blend of terror and education, a combination that sets it apart from typical Halloween attractions. “This event is a great way for our students to apply their engineering skills in a creative and fun way,” said Stephen Casey, senior academic advisor at Missouri S&T. “It’s also an opportunity for the community to experience the mine in a different light, quite literally.”

The event features a variety of scares, including strobe lights, smoke machines, and jump scares designed to keep visitors on edge. Safety is a priority, with closed-toe shoes required and flat-bottomed shoes recommended for the uneven terrain of the mine. Tickets are priced at $15 for adults and children age 11 and older, and $13 for children age 10 and younger, Missouri S&T students, and members of the military with valid IDs. Visitors can also receive a discount of up to $3 per person by bringing canned goods to donate to Russell House, a local food pantry.

One of the standout features of this year’s Haunted Mine is the “STEM in the Shadows” event on Friday, Oct. 24. This event is designed to engage K-12 students in STEM activities. Any student who participates in a STEM Center activity on site will gain free admission to the Haunted Mine. The mine will be open with lights on from 4-6 p.m. and lights off from 6-8 p.m., providing a unique opportunity for students to explore the mine in a educational context before experiencing the full haunted attraction.

The Haunted Mine also offers a special option for families with small children. On any open night before Halloween, groups can walk through the mine with the lights on from 5-6 p.m. for $5 per child. This allows younger visitors to experience the mine without the intense scares, making it a more family-friendly option.

The Haunted Mine is located at 12350 Private Drive 7002 in Rolla, just off Bridge School Road. For more information, visitors can contact Stephen Casey at [email protected].

This event not only provides a thrilling experience for visitors but also highlights the innovative and educational aspects of the mining industry. By transforming the Experimental Mine into a haunted attraction, Missouri S&T students demonstrate their creativity and technical skills, while also raising funds for their academic pursuits. The Haunted Mine serves as a reminder that the mining industry is not just about extraction and production; it’s also about innovation, education, and community engagement.

As the Haunted Mine continues to grow in popularity, it has the potential to shape the development of the mining sector in several ways. Firstly, it can inspire other mining schools and universities to create similar events, fostering a culture of innovation and community engagement within the industry. Secondly, it can help to attract young talent to the mining sector by showcasing the exciting and diverse opportunities available in the field. Lastly, it can serve as a platform for mining students to develop and showcase their skills, preparing them for successful careers in the industry.

In conclusion, the Haunted Mine at Missouri University of Science and Technology is more than just a Halloween attraction; it’s a testament to the creativity, innovation, and community spirit of the mining industry. As the event continues to grow and evolve, it has the potential to shape the future of the mining sector in meaningful and exciting ways.
