Endomines, Sofi Filtration Pilot Alchemist for Sustainable Mining

In a significant stride towards sustainable mining, Endomines and Finnish water purification technology company Sofi Filtration have successfully piloted the Alchemist filtration system at the Pampalo gold mine processing plant. This innovative technology processes mine side streams, specifically surplus waters, to recover valuable minerals that would otherwise be lost. The implications for the mining sector are substantial, potentially reshaping how companies approach resource efficiency and environmental stewardship.

The Alchemist technology stands out for its ability to recover an impressive 98% of fine concentrate from filter water, with the pilot at Pampalo achieving a remarkable 99% gold recovery. “It is generally known that after the final flotation of the concentration process, there is still 1–20% fine concentrate in the filter water. With the Alchemist technology, on average 98% can be recovered. The percentage depends on the site. In the pilot carried out by Endomines, gold recovery was even as high as 99%,” said Nina Harjula, Marketing Director of Sofi Filtration. This level of efficiency challenges the status quo, suggesting that significant untapped value exists in what was previously considered waste.

The technology’s design is equally noteworthy. It operates without chemicals or disposable filters, separating particles down to 0.3 micrometers in size. The self-cleaning system integrates seamlessly into existing processes, as demonstrated during the Pampalo pilot, where it functioned alongside the enrichment process throughout the entire production cycle. This adaptability is crucial for mining operations seeking to enhance efficiency without disrupting established workflows.

Ilkka Räty, Production Director of Endomines, expressed satisfaction with the pilot results, emphasizing the dual benefits of improved resource efficiency and cleaner water discharge. “We are very satisfied with the pilot results, as of course we want to recover all the gold that can be obtained. More efficient gold recovery from filtration waters improves resource efficiency and also ensures cleaner waters. Every step towards more sustainable mining is significant,” Räty said. This sentiment reflects a growing industry recognition that sustainability and profitability are not mutually exclusive but rather interconnected.

The collaboration between Sofi Filtration and Endomines is set to continue, with the shared goal of recovering every last bit of gold from mine surplus water while prioritizing environmental care. This partnership could serve as a model for other mining companies, demonstrating that innovative technologies can drive both economic and ecological gains.

The successful implementation of the Alchemist technology at Pampalo raises important questions for the mining sector. How might widespread adoption of such technologies reshape operational strategies? Could this pilot inspire a broader industry shift towards circular economy principles, where waste is minimized, and resources are maximized? As mining companies face increasing pressure to balance profitability with sustainability, innovations like the Alchemist technology offer a compelling path forward. The sector’s response to this development will be a critical indicator of its commitment to embracing change and driving progress.
