Highlands College of Montana Tech is set to host its annual Trades and Technology Day on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, offering high school juniors and seniors a hands-on glimpse into various technical and vocational careers. This event, designed to spark interest in trades and technology, will feature a range of interactive activities across different departments, from construction and automotive technology to mining and healthcare.
Students will have the opportunity to build walls in the Construction Technology Lab, compete in a tire-changing competition with the Automotive Technology Department, and even climb utility poles and operate bucket trucks in the Pre-Apprentice Line Yard. The Radiology Technology Department will demonstrate how to take x-rays, while the Mining Technology program will provide a realistic look into the daily workings of a mine. Additionally, students will learn essential life-saving skills such as CPR and First Aid, and dive into surveying and concrete work with the Civil Engineering Technology Department.
Bernie Phelps, Director of Dual Enrollment and Grant Funding at Highlands College, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Get ready for an exhilarating day packed with exploration and hands-on experiences as we dive into the world of trades and technology. Whether you’re a curious beginner or looking to enhance your skills, this event is designed to ignite your passion and expand your horizons. Students will have the opportunity to network with industry leaders, who will share their experiences. Students can ask questions, and explore potential career pathways or further learning opportunities.”
The event comes at a time when vocational education is gaining traction among high school graduates. According to the National Student Clearinghouse, enrollment at U.S. community colleges with a vocational focus grew by 16% in Fall 2023, a substantial increase from the previous year’s 3% growth. Highlands College offers programs that prepare students for in-demand, high-paying careers, with graduates enjoying excellent placement rates following graduation.
Trades and Technology Day will run from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at 25 Basin Creek Road in Butte. Lunch will be provided, and the event has hosted as many as 300 students in the past. Space is limited, and schools or individuals interested in attending are encouraged to register early. A chaperone is required to attend, and schools are asked to limit groups to 20 students or less if possible. Registration will close on September 26, 2025. This event not only provides students with a practical understanding of various trades and technologies but also highlights the growing importance of vocational education in today’s job market. As more students opt for career-focused education, events like Trades and Technology Day play a crucial role in shaping the future workforce, bridging the gap between education and industry needs. The hands-on experiences and networking opportunities offered can significantly influence students’ career choices, potentially steering more towards the skilled trades and technical fields that are vital to the economy.
