Fortescue’s Infinity Train Completes Zero-Emission Test Run

Fortescue has unveiled a prototype of its proposed “Infinity Train” electric locomotive, completing a 1,100 km journey from Perth to the Pilbara. This milestone marks a significant step in the decarbonization of the company’s heavy haul operations, co-developed with Downer Group. The Infinity Train concept, revealed in March 2022, aims to be a world-first iron ore train capable of fully charging its batteries through regenerative braking, creating a self-sustaining, zero-emission rail system.

The prototype’s successful trip across Australia demonstrates its capability to handle the demanding conditions of Fortescue’s massive mining operations. “We’re thrilled to see our battery electric locomotive prototype arrive in the Pilbara,” said Ellie Coates, CEO of Fortescue Zero. “This achievement, using zero fossil fuels, represents a major step in Fortescue’s journey to Real Zero.”

The Infinity Train utilizes energy generated during the descent of loaded trains on downhill sections of Fortescue’s 385-mile private, heavy-haul rail network. This energy recharges the train’s battery systems, eliminating the need for external charging infrastructure or additional renewable energy sources. Fortescue estimates that deploying the Infinity Train concept at its mines will eliminate more than 82 million liters of diesel fuel consumption annually, reducing about 235,200 tons of CO₂ emissions. This change alone would cut about 11% of Fortescue’s Scope 1 emissions, bringing the company closer to its “Real Zero” emissions-free operations goal.
