Baishihu Mine Pioneers 400 Autonomous Trucks in Harsh Terrain

In the heart of northwest China, a seismic shift is underway at Guanghui Energy’s Baishihu open-pit coal mine. EACON Mining Technology has kicked off a monumental project, deploying 400 autonomous haulage trucks, setting a new global standard for large-scale autonomous mining operations. Nearly 200 trucks are already in operation, with the full fleet expected to be up and running within the month. This isn’t a solo effort. EACON has teamed up with regional mining contractors Mingyang and Huaye, showcasing a collaborative spirit that’s as impressive as the technology itself. The trucks, low-emission hybrids manufactured by LGMG and Tonly, are tackling overburden removal in one of the world’s harshest mining environments. Guanghui Energy, already operating a fleet of 1,600 vehicles at Baishihu, isn’t just dipping its toes into autonomy. It’s diving in headfirst. The company engaged EACON to engineer priority rules, including left-hand drive and giving way to the left, into their autonomous solution. This isn’t just about efficiency; it’s about safety. By removing operators from high-risk areas, Guanghui is creating a safer, more streamlined work environment.

Cangbao Su, Safety Director of Baishihu, has seen the changes firsthand. “Since introducing autonomous trucks, the site has seen a clear reduction in safety risks,” he observed. “Mining operations have become notably more intelligent and efficient.” This isn’t just talk.
