BME to Highlight Decarbonisation Efforts at 2025 Mining Indaba in Cape Town

Omnia Holdings’ BME stands poised to make waves at the 2025 Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town, where it will showcase its unwavering commitment to decarbonisation and the adoption of advanced technologies. With a keen eye on the mining sector’s urgent need to lessen its environmental impact while boosting operational efficiency, BME is stepping into the spotlight as a silver sponsor. Ralf Hennecke, Managing Director of BME, emphasizes the company’s reputation for innovative emulsions, equipment, and electronic initiation technology—all designed to enhance environmental sustainability in mining.

As part of the Omnia Group, which champions the ethos of “innovating to enhance life, together creating a greener future,” BME is eager to have Omnia CEO Seelan Gobalsamy on board for a panel discussion titled “Sustainable Investment: Catalyst or Constraint for Mining Development?” This session promises to stir up vital conversations around the intersection of sustainability and investment in the mining sector. Adding to the dialogue, Nishen Hariparsad, BME’s General Manager for Technology and Marketing, will also participate in a panel discussing “The role of technology in building and undermining sustainability in African mining.” Hennecke believes these discussions are crucial, as they allow BME to share insights gained from its own sustainability journey, which has positively influenced mining efficiencies and sustainability goals for its customers.

BME’s approach to sustainability addresses some of the mining industry’s most pressing challenges, particularly the imperative to reduce carbon emissions. Hennecke highlights the direct correlation between energy efficiency and carbon reduction, pointing out that cutting energy consumption is a straightforward path to lowering carbon footprints. This is especially relevant in regions like South Africa, where coal-fired electricity is prevalent. BME’s innovations—ranging from emulsions to electronic initiation systems—enable mines to achieve significant energy savings while adhering to stringent environmental standards.

The technological advancements spearheaded by BME have proven critical in delivering these efficiencies. Hariparsad underscores the impact of their AXXIS® technology, which enhances blasting precision and efficiency. The AXXIS Titanium® system facilitates larger, controlled blasts, reducing operational interruptions and streamlining processes. This not only optimizes energy consumption but also improves rock fragmentation, thereby lowering energy demands in subsequent phases of mining operations. Coupled with BME’s Blastmap™III blast planning software, mines can further refine blasting outcomes, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions throughout the mining process.

BME’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond technology. Their dual salt emulsions present a greener alternative to conventional explosives, minimizing nitrate leaching and greenhouse gas emissions. This innovation not only mitigates environmental risks but also aids mines in meeting local regulations and international standards. The manufacturing process for these emulsions is energy-efficient, operating at lower temperatures to further cut energy consumption and carbon emissions. Additionally, BME’s pioneering use of recycled oil in its emulsions removes millions of litres of hazardous waste from circulation, preventing soil and water contamination while promoting a circular economy.

Following its rebranding under the Omnia Group, BME operates through two core divisions: BME Blasting Solutions and BME Metallurgy. This restructuring has broadened its impact, enabling the company to bolster its customers’ sustainability efforts across the mining cycle. Hariparsad notes, “Our ability to contribute at both the blasting and mineral processing stages gives us a definite edge in the market.” This comprehensive approach aligns with the mining sector’s ESG priorities, helping mines meet Scope 1, 2, and 3 emission targets.

BME is not just resting on its laurels; it continues to pursue a global growth trajectory. The company’s successful integration with its Indonesian joint venture, alongside expanding operations in Canada, Australia, and West Africa, showcases its capacity to deliver value across diverse markets. Hennecke remarks, “We’re leveraging our expertise to support the growing demand for green metals and other critical resources.” The commissioning of detonator plants in Canada and Australia further underscores BME’s commitment to sustainable growth, while its ongoing partnership with MNK in Indonesia has already secured three new contracts, signaling promising expansion.

Safety remains a cornerstone of BME’s operational philosophy, reflected in its remarkable Recordable Case Rate of zero over the reporting period. This world-class safety record is a testament to the effectiveness of their ‘Safety for Life’ program and the collective diligence of the team. Hennecke stresses that this focus on safety is integral to their sustainability and ESG commitments, aligning seamlessly with Omnia’s broader mission to foster a positive and sustainable impact on both the planet and local communities.
