In a groundbreaking study published in ‘Meitan kexue jishu’ (Science and Technology of Coal), researchers have unveiled a transparent exploration technology aimed at identifying hidden disaster-causing factors within coal mines, using the Tunbao Coal Mine in Xinjiang as a case study. This innovative approach addresses a critical challenge in the mining industry: ensuring safety and operational efficiency while navigating complex geological structures.
Lead author Haijun Wang from the CCTEG Xi’an Research Institute (Group) Co., Ltd. emphasizes the significance of this research. “The complexity of geological structures in coal mines poses serious risks, including gas outbursts and roof collapses. Our transparent exploration system not only enhances safety but also promotes intelligent mining practices,” Wang states. The study outlines a comprehensive technical framework that integrates various methods, including 3D seismic data analysis, channel wave exploration, and advanced geophysical prospecting, to create a clearer understanding of geological anomalies.
The implications of this research extend beyond safety. By accurately mapping geological structures and identifying potential hazards, mining companies can optimize their operations, reduce downtime, and ultimately increase productivity. The study reveals that the influence of faults on stress concentration can extend up to 30 meters, highlighting the need for precise geological assessments to mitigate risks in mining operations. Furthermore, the research identifies gas enrichment zones controlled by fault lines, providing critical insights for managing gas emissions effectively.
Wang’s team has constructed a four-level technical system that encompasses regional geological research, exploration of hidden disaster-causing factors, scientific evaluation of disaster threats, and the transparency of geological structures. This system has been successfully tested in the Tunbao Coal Mine, showcasing its potential to transform traditional geological exploration into a more digital and intelligent process.
“This research not only offers a feasible path for enhancing safety in coal mining but also opens the door for technological advancements in the construction sector,” Wang adds. The integration of digital technologies and 3D modeling in geological assessments could lead to more informed decision-making, ultimately benefiting the entire industry.
As the construction sector continues to evolve, the findings from this study may pave the way for new standards in risk management and operational efficiency. With the increasing demand for sustainable and safe mining practices, the transparent exploration technology developed by Wang and his team could become a cornerstone for future innovations in the field.
